You will need: colored lunch-sized paper bags, votive candles, sand or kitty litter, a long lighter, the help of an adult.
- Figure out how many luminaries you would like to make. Usually they are used along a path with luminaries on both sides. They should be about one to two feet apart along the path.
- Get several lunch-sized paper bags. They can be any color you choose, and may be purchased at most craft stores.
- Put about two cups of sand or kitty litter in each bag so that they will not blow away when you set them outside.
- Arrange the bags outside however you choose. Place a votive candle in each bag, nestled in the sand or kitty litter. Be sure that they are sturdy!
- As it begins to get dark, with the help of a trustworthy adult, light each candle to light your way through the night.
Variation: Punch holes or cut out designs in the bags for a “jack-o-lantern” appearance.
